Cornelius David Krieghoff (1815 - 1872)
Krieghoff was a Dutch-born Canadian-American painter of the 19th century. During his lifetime, he lived between Germany, New York and Montreal, where he helped found the Montreal Society of Artists in 1847. Krieghoff is best known for his paintings of Canadian scenes involving landscapes and outdoor life, and are still sought-after today. He retired in Chicago, where he died in 1872. His works are held in many galleries in Canada and the United States. Over 2000 of his works were collected by Ken Thompson, and donated to the Art Gallery of Ontario.
