Birch – Natural Edge Platter or Shallow Bowl
Made from a piece of birch crotch, where one limb branches into two, shared roots
supporting independent evolution/growth.
⇒ Branching shows on the outside as one trunk transforms into two branches.
⇒ Branching shows on the inside with feathery figure as one becomes two.
⇒ Feathery figure becomes visible when the wood is (literally) turned into a platter
or bowl, exposing interior wood.
⇒ When turned into a bowl or platter with a natural edge, sometimes what emerges
is a piece with a shape that looks like a heart, as in this case.
A thing of beauty and contemplation which doubles as a useful object.
This Birch Heart has a food-safe oil finish. The oil is impregnated into the wood and the oil and wood cure together into a finish that enables the piece to defend itself from usual human use. Care instructions are included.
