Sale Name: Retreat Cottage Estate Auction - April 10-29, 2025
LOT 393S - Three constabulary Truncheons, see description
Description

These Billy Clubs or Truncheons have their roots in Port de Grave and came from a Tucker, one of the oldest family names in the community . They are most likely Georgian and dating from as early as 1820. One has clear remnants of the original green paint with the letter R clearly visible which stands for Reign but the letter G for King George is only partially visible and clearly warrants restoration. The Crown is clearly visible . There was a reference to a Constable Turner in Port de Grave in the 19th century and there is a reference to Jail House Mountain in the community. No doubt it would have been the location of the jail when the constable kept prisoners. The design of the Truncheons is unlike others, implying that it could have been turned on a lathe by a resident carpenter .
