Train, move, dance, or just chat about ballet, in a one-hour online lesson with The National Ballet of Canada Corps Dancer, Tene Ward. Open to all ages and abilities.
You may recognize Tene from a 2020 viral video, trying on a pair of pointe shoes in the shade “Ballet Bronze”. It was a call heard around the world for greater representation and diversity in ballet:
“There’s certain traditions like pink shoes that just don’t work for the twenty-first century anymore, given the fact that the people that are included in the ballet world now aren’t just white,” Tene said. She also said that when she looks in the mirror while wearing her new shoes, she sees herself.
“Everything is me, the way I look is finally accepted,” she said.
Tene Ward was born in Sydney, Australia and trained at Canberra Festival Ballet School in Canberra, Australia; The Australian Ballet School; and the Dutch National Trainee Program. Ms. Ward joined The National Ballet of Canada in 2018 as a RBC apprentice and became a member of the corps de ballet in 2019.
Ms. Ward’s repertoire includes The Nutcracker, Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, Anna Karenina, The Dream and Paquita.
