'The Great St. John's Race - The Tely Ten'

“The Great St. John’s Race – The Tely Ten”, an original oil painting created by Peter Lewis will be auctioned off to the highest bidder on Bartlett Auctions web site. The online auction will run from 6:30pm, July 21st to 5:00pm, July 30th. All proceeds from the sale will be donated to the Health Care Foundation, in support of the cardiac care program in Newfoundland and Labrador.

Peter Lewis, winner of the 1984 and 1989 Tely Ten, has been involved with the cardiac care program in NL since being diagnosed with a genetic heart condition. He received amazing care at the congestive heart failure clinic in St. John’s until 2018 when his condition declined, and he was sent to the Ottawa Heart Institute for a heart transplant. This painting has been in Peter’s private collection and has special meaning for him. Now he wants to give back to the cardiac program that helped him along his medical journey by donating the painting to raise funds for the cardiac care program.

The featured painting is a commemorative and historic depiction of the prestigious race. If you look closely, the spirits of competitors past appear in the sky. The lead runners representing all runners are guided to the finish line on Bannerman Park Road by a police escort. Jack Bell, the inaugural winner sits in the passenger seat gently urging all participants to their best effort.

Look closely for the number 1922 inscribed; the year of the first Tely Ten!
