Wallace Robinson  MacAskill (1887 -1956)

MacAskill was born and worked in Nova Scotia. He began taking pictures at a young age after being gifted a camera, and attended the Wade School of Photography in New York for training in his late teens. His style is described as 'pictorialism', using a soft focus that gives the hint of impressionist artists. This art piece demonstrates that technique. The soft tinting on the piece was most likely completed by his wife, Elva, who was a painter as well as photographer. In 1953, his work was used to present a taped, illustrative teaching series for photographers. He was made a Fellow of the Photographers' Society of America in 1954.

The SPCA St. John's is an adoption-focused agency helping homeless cats and dogs find happy beginnings.  We also work to encourage and assist with spaying and neutering across the Avalon Peninsula, helping make animal homelessness a thing of the past.

All the work we do is based upon the Five Freedoms of Animal Welfare, which states that an animal's primary welfare needs can be met if five basic freedoms are followed; 1) Freedom from hunger and thirst, 2) Freedom from discomfort, 3) Freedom from pain, injury, or disease, 4) Freedom to express normal behaviour, 5) Freedom from fear and distress.

Our vision is communities where companion animals thrive with respect, love and wellbeing.  The SPCA St. John's provides leadership, education and a consistent voice on matters that promote and improve the welfare of animals.  We care for and shelter companion animals in need, prevent cruelty and encourage responsible pet ownership.

The funds raised through this auction will enable us to provide the necessary medical care for our shelter animals. All animals in our care receive a veterinary health check, are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, flea & worm treated, microchipped, and all cats are FIV/FELV tested. Some animals entering our care also require extensive dental surgeries, medications and testing for skin and food allergies, along with emergency veterinary care. These funds will also assist with these unexpected costs.
