Textile ensemble, Jennifer Cooper
Jennifer Cooper is a textile artist who lives in North Vancouver, BC and completed studies at Memorial University. While in the Province, she prepared a set of artwork for an exhibition entitled Archtextiles. Her contribution focused on the history (and loss) of the Cod fishery. It consists of seven cod fishing related pieces that, in total make for an impressive display.
Her interpretation of the theme was that it was the codfish that was truly instrumental in the building of Canada. Each piece relates a segment of the lengthy story that starts with the Vikings who travelled the northern waters, from the coast of Norway, to Iceland, to Greenland then to the New Found Land . The first known map featuring the new world is hand stitched within one piece.
The 1:3 scale dory, is three dimensional, with many historical images transferred and collaged to cloth on the inside. It includes text describing the tough life of the dorymen, stitched on the outside.
The wall hanging displays Giovanni Caboto's words from his Captain's Journal, upon first seeing the numbers of codfish in the waters off Bonavista ...” there were so many that you could lower a bucket in to the waters”. This piece is intended to be suspended a few inches from the wall, so the lettering casts a shadow of Cabot's words.
The Ghosts of Cod Past is a set of three silkscreened images of codfish, suspended in triplicate, to provide the illusion of the former quantity of fish that once swam in the Grand Banks.
The exhibit was on display at the Wooden Boat Museum until sold at a fund raising auction in 2018. Each piece is approximately 24x54

“The internet started here” … in Heart’s Content, with the landing of the Atlantic cable in 1866. It was the beginning of global communications, allowing Europe and North America to talk to each other, and it all passed back and forth through the cable station in Heart’s Content. The world celebrated, other countries followed suite. But it all started here.
Now Heart’s Content again stands on the threshold of international recognition, with the cable station up for nomination as the next UNESCO World Heritage Site in Newfoundland and Labrador.
