Shannon Barnett
Shannon Barnett is an Australian trombonist and composer, currently based in Cologne, Germany. She established herself as an important voice in the Australian scene by performing in ensembles including Vada, The Bamboos, The Vampires, and as a guest with the Andrea Keller Quartet, on the 2004 ABC Jazz release Angels and Rascals. Barnett has also appeared with the Australian Art Orchestra, Barney McAll's Mother of Dreams and Secrets feat. Kurt Rosenwinkel, Charlie Haden and from 2009-2010, she worked as a multi-instrumentalist and composer with the contemporary circus group Circus Oz.

In 2010, Barnett released her debut album as a leader, entitled 'Country', on the Which Way Music label. After attending Dave Douglas' ‘Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music’ in Banff, Canada in 2010, Barnett was inspired to relocate to New York City, where she completed a Master of Music degree. There she performed with the likes of Darcy James Argue's Secret Society, Pedro Giraudo, Cyrille Aimée and the Jon Faddis Jazz Orchestra of New York and was a regular member of the Birdland Big Band.

In early 2014, she moved to Cologne, Germany, to take up a position with the WDR Big Band, which gave her the opportunity to perform with guests including Vince Mendoza, Ron Carter, Joshua Redman, Maria Schneider and Paquito D'Rivera. She has also become very active in the local scene. Her quartet, featuring Stefan Karl Schmid, David Helm and Fabian Arends released their debut album in 2016 on Double Moon/Challenge Records, and the band was subsequently nominated as a semi-finalist in the 2017 Neuer Deutscher Jazzpreis. As a result of our choir receiving a Gold Standard at our local music festival, we are honoured to receive an invitation to participate in MusicFest Canada 2024 in Toronto, ON. MusicFest Canada provides an opportunity for students and educators from across Canada to meet, demonstrate, and share their musical achievements and creativity. This is an exciting opportunity for our students to showcase their skills, to perform for Canadian musical experts, and reflect on musical achievements and creativity in an educationally focused way.

The Beaconsfield Junior High Choir is a non-auditioned ensemble of 61 people, welcoming students regardless of previous experience. Our school boasts a diverse student population of just under 500 students from Grades 7-9, representing various nationalities, cultural backgrounds and socio-economic circumstances.

Music, as a language we all understand, creates a shared space for our students to grow, collaborate, and celebrate their unique identities. It is a place where every student, regardless of their background, culture, identity, or financial means finds a welcoming and inclusive community. Among our members, we are fortunate to have Ukrainian students who have found solace and joy in the choir. I am proud to share that more than 10% of our membership identify as part of the LGBTQ2+ community. Another 15% of our members face financial constraints that may hinder their ability to participate in this remarkable opportunity without your support. Choir provides a platform for our students to express themselves through the language of music as a shared experience.

Participating in MusicFest Canada will not only enhance our students' musical skills but will also contribute significantly to their personal growth, collaboration, and cultural enrichment. Your contribution will help us reach our financial goals and will also play a crucial role in empowering our students. We firmly believe that by supporting our choir you are not just contributing to an event but investing in a community that celebrates diversity, inclusion, and the transformative power of music that will provide a life-long positive impact on our students.
