*This piece is thought to be a study for 'Venetian Palaces on the Grand Canal', 1899. It is sketched and painted on a heavy manilla-type paper, commonly used for studies at the time. As is typical of the artist, evidence of pencil is present below the watercolour.

*This piece is not titled on the work itself. Title is based on this similar work (showing same series of buildings in Venice).

Condition (in consultation with Beverley Lambert, Art Conservator, St. John's Newfoundland):

- currently framed using acid free materials and UV-safe conservation glass. Corners protected with archival fittings. (One corner missing approximately 1/4" material, see photos).

Paper originally wood fibre, off-white manilla-type, now showing discoloration and fading from age, exposure to non-archival framing materials, sunlight. Paint and composition are still quite vibrant and clear. With age, these edges can become brittle, (slight damage, see photos)

Signed lower left. Signature is clear and crisp. (See photos)

Maurice Brazil Prendergast (1958-1924) was born in St. John's, Newfoundland in 1858 and moved to Boston at the age of 10.
