Finding the North Pole
By Dr. Frederick A. Cook and Robert E. Peary (1909)

Finding the North Pole (1909) is a fascinating and historically significant account of two competing expeditions that sought to be the first to reach the North Pole: one led by Dr. Frederick A. Cook and the other by Robert E. Peary. The book presents the narratives of both explorers, offering readers a unique perspective on their journeys to the Arctic and the dramatic claims of success made by each man.

Dr. Cook’s account details his 1908 expedition, in which he claimed to have reached the North Pole before Peary. His narrative provides insight into the challenges faced by explorers in the Arctic, including the harsh environment, the logistics of travel, and the struggle for survival. Peary’s account, published as a rebuttal, recounts his own 1909 expedition, in which he famously declared that he had reached the North Pole with his team, including his African-American assistant, Matthew Henson.

The book is an essential work for understanding the rivalry between Cook and Peary, both of whom were celebrated and later scrutinized for their claims. Their expeditions represent the pinnacle of early 20th-century exploration, yet their conflicting accounts and the controversy surrounding their achievements have sparked debates that continue to this day. Finding the North Pole provides readers with a firsthand look at one of the most captivating and contested episodes in the history of exploration. It remains an important text for those interested in the polar regions, the history of exploration, and the dynamics of scientific discovery and personal ambition.
